Buying a new home comes with many small tasks that must be attended to, but one that you do not want to overlook is security. Although the following mistakes seem minor, they can result in a theft or vandalism of your home, especially if you won't be staying in it right away. Knowing these mistakes can help you avoid them.

#1: Using the old keys

When you close on your home, you will be given at least one set of keys. No matter how many sets are placed into your hands, though, you can be relatively sure they aren't the only keys in circulation. Family and friends of the previous owners, as well as service personnel like dog walkers and contractors, may also have keys to the home. To ensure the security of the house, have a locksmith rekey all the locks before moving anything in. This is also a good time for the locksmith to service the locks by cleaning and lubricating them and replacing any locks that are wearing out. This way you have new keys, and the locks are in optimum working condition.

#2: Not changing the garage door code

New keys won't provide much security if someone could still get access through the house through the automatic garage door. Much like keys, there could be other openers in circulation beyond the ones you received at closing. Fortunately, modern openers can be reset. The method varies slightly depending on the make and model, but generally you will have to push a button on the main unit and one on the opener to sync up to a new code. If you aren't sure how, contact the manufacturer for help.

#3: Ignoring window and sliders

Windows and sliding doors are the final security hole in a new home. Walk through the house and verify that all windows open and close properly, and that the locks are fully operational. Sliding doors, in particular, can sometimes be forced open if they only have the factory lock installed. A locksmith can install a rail lock on the sliding door, which prevents it from being lifted off the track and opened. Drop bars and other increased security devices may also be desirable for either sliders or standard windows. Many locksmiths will also service, repair, or replace window locks for a small fee.
